DOC or DOCX
Did you write your manuscript using Microsoft Word?
Then save your file as a .doc or .docx and upload it directly to the KDP dashboard. I use Microsoft Word to draft, and I never have issues directly uploading DOC files unless I have added graphics or used fancy fonts.
I’ve embedded a tutorial below about best practices and how to format your manuscript in Microsoft Word to create a simple, straightforward, no-frills file that converts well to Kindle.
Not using Word? Then you have three options:
MOBI or EPUB
If you use Vellum to draft, you can save your file as a MOBI or EPUB and upload it directly to the KDP dashboard.
If you are using some other software that won’t output a MOBI or EPUB, you can convert your file using various tools freely available on the internet, but I strongly suggest using Draft2Digital.com’s formatting tool.
You’ll have to sign up for a free Draft2Digital account, but this will allow you to download both a MOBI and an EPUB at the same time. Your file will be safely stored there as a backup, and if you decide you want to also have them distribute your book to e-commerce storefronts in the future, everything is all ready to go. Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how to turn your ebook file into a MOBI and an EPUB using Draft2Digital’s tool.
KPF
A KPF is only possible by converting your original file using Kindle Create, a free formatting software from Amazon, which you can download here. I’ve never used it, but Dave from Kindleprenuer has a helpful tutorial which I’ve embedded below.
