If you are indie publishing, you can choose
\na title for your cozy at any point in the planning or drafting process.
\n<\/b>You can even put off the decision until editing is complete.<\/span><\/div>\n
\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

If you are submitting your manuscript to agents or publishers,
\nyou will need a title before doing so (although there\u2019s a good chance the
\npublisher will opt to go with their own title of choice if they accept your book).<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

If you are going indie, you do need a title before you can
\nhave a cover designed. Covers are essential for prerelease promotion,
\nso there is wisdom in choosing your title before your manuscript
\nis complete.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

There are a few things you should have solidly nailed down
\nbefore trying to title your mystery:<\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

What is the setting?<\/span><\/p>\n

Who is your sleuth? <\/span><\/p>\n

What is the crime?<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the sub-genres you are targetting? Culinary? Animal? Historical?
\nParanormal? Something else?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

What is the tone? Semiserious? Comic? <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Is this book going to be part of a series? If so, do you want to
\nplan for consistency in titles? <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Knowing what sub-genres your cozy falls into is probably the most important factor<\/b>. I did a whole post about cozy mystery sub-genres here.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

If you know the sub-genre of cozies you are aiming for, you can do a much better
\njob of surveying the covers of books that are selling well
\nand make sure your title and cover design conform to reader expectations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Titles (and the covers they are placed on) are the single most
\nimportant signal to readers about what kind of story they can expect from you<\/b>. Let\u2019s
\nlook at some common conventions for cozy mystery titles:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n

Something-Preposition-Somewhere<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Titles like Family Feud in Savannah<\/a>, <\/i>Gunshots at the Gala<\/a>, <\/i>Lantern in the Lighthouse<\/a>, <\/i>and <\/b>Murder at the Mansion<\/a> <\/i>all fall into this category. <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

A series using this title format across all of the books is Courtney McFarlin’s <\/span>Razzy Cat<\/i> Series.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Another example is Cindy Bell’s Little Leaf Creek Cozy Mysteries.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

These types of titles are extremely popular within the historical cozy murder mystery sub-genre: <\/span>Murder at High Tide<\/a><\/i>, <\/span>Murder at the Fair<\/a><\/i>, <\/span>Murder in an English Glade<\/a><\/i>, <\/span>Murder on the Pier<\/a><\/i>, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

A historical cozy murder mystery series example is Lee Strauss’s long-running Ginger Gold Mystery Series<\/i>.<\/span><\/div>\n

Murder-Something-Something <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Closely related are titles like Murder and the Mermaid<\/a>, Murder Over Easy<\/a>, Murder by the Slice<\/a>,<\/i>  Murder of a Stacked Librarian<\/a><\/i>, and Murder with Cherry Tarts<\/a>.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

These types of titles are very popular in culinary cozies and historical cozies. I wasn’t able to find a series that consistently used this format across all titles, but here are some individual covers of books using the Murder-Something-Something title formula.<\/span><\/p>\n

Switch the format around and you get titles like The Fiesta Burger Murder<\/a><\/i>, Whispering Hills Murder<\/a><\/i>, Mai Tais and Murder<\/a>, and Blackmail can be Murder<\/a>. <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

These types of titles are widely used in culinary cozies, probably because the queen of baking cozies, Joanna Fluke, used this format for her Hannah Swensen Series<\/i>.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Another example is Rosie Point’s Miller Pepper Mysteries<\/i>.<\/span><\/div>\n

And, finally, K. E. O’Connor uses a slight variation of this format for her Holly Holmes <\/i><\/span>Mysteries<\/span>.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

Death-by-Something <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Moving on from titles with the word murder in them, we arrive at the ubiquitous Death-by-Something format: Death by Vanilla<\/a>, Death by Dumpling<\/a>, Death by Didgeridoo<\/a><\/i>, and Death by Pirates<\/a><\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

A series using the format is <\/span>Jennifer Alderman\u2019s Travel Can Be Murder Mysteries.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You could substitute any other crime-related nouns in the place of murder for any of the previous examples and still have a serviceable title. Mysteries do not have to be centered around a murder, although most are.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Fatal-Something<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

And in our final stop on the tour of death words in mystery titles, we come to the likes of:  A Fatal Reuni<\/a>o<\/a><\/i>n<\/a>, Fatal Fundraiser<\/a>, The Fatal Flying Affair<\/a>, and Fatal Brushstroke<\/a>.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Tortured Puns <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

We now move on to the quirkiest corner of the cozy mystery universe, my personal favorites, titles concocted by twisting puns: Assault and Batting<\/a>, A New Leash on Life<\/a>, For Better or Hearse<\/a>, and Paws for Concern.<\/a><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Chelsea Thomas uses this format to title her Apple Orchard Cozy Mysteries<\/i>.  <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Another example is Nora Page\u2019s Bookmobile Mysteries<\/i>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Tortured Titles <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

If we take tortured puns a step further and apply them to well-known titles of movies, tv shows, songs, and famous literature, we get an even bigger bang for our punny buck: A Tale of Two Cookies<\/a><\/i>, Pretty Little Fliers<\/a>, Swine and Punishment<\/a>, and Another One Bites the Crust.<\/a><\/i>  <\/span><\/p>\n

These types of titles are most popular in animal cozies but are also used for culinary cozies, bookshop\/library cozies, and paranormals. <\/span><\/p>\n

Ellen Riggs mixes generic puns with twisted titles in her Bought the Farm Series<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

I used a similar strategy when coming up with titles for my Little Tombstone Mysteries<\/i>, although I concentrated on using titles of old westerns as my starting point. <\/span><\/div>\n

Krista Davis’s Paws and Claws Mysteries<\/i> is another series using twisted titles.<\/span><\/div>\n

Titles that Rhyme <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Continuing with the wordplay theme, we arrive at titles that rhyme: <\/span>Ghosts, Lore, and a House by the Shore<\/a>, Tall Tales and Witchy Fails<\/a>, One-Time Crime<\/a>, Cutie Pies and Deadly Lies.<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Rhyming titles are very popular in witch cozies. For example Amy Boyles<\/span> Southern Belles and Spells Matchmaker
\nSeries<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

<\/b>Alliterative Titles<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Scones and Scandal<\/a>, Hardcovers, Homicide, and Hairballs<\/a>, The Stiff in the Study<\/a>, and The Barista Bump-Off<\/a>. <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

A series using this title format is the Southern Charms Series<\/i> by Bella
\nFalls.<\/span><\/p>\n
